Is WhatsApp the New Twitter?

Is WhatsApp the New Twitter?
WhatsApp the popular messaging service for Blackberry, iPhone and Android phones is now more popular than Twitter and Facebook, says its CEO Jan Kuom  . He was speaking at the All Things D Dive into Mobile Conference  when making the claim.
This free messaging service now claims 8 billion inbound messages and more than 12 billion outbound messages. That is nearly double the messages sent on Facebook! But why is WhatsApp so popular? Obviously the fact that it is free, and also because it allows users to share text, video and audio. So what is this app and what are its features? And is it really here to stay?

What is WhatsApp?
WhatsApp makes use of the Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) to send messages across various platforms. Once the user creates an account using his phone number and username, the system connects the phone numbers in his address book with its database of users to add contacts and connect.

Why is it Popular?
As told earlier, it is free and also because it allows users to share multiple media messages. It is also cross platform which means you can send a message from your Android phone to an iPhone/Android/Windows phone user. It is best for international callers who would otherwise have to pay hundreds of dollars for an international calling plan. And when compared to Facebook- its ad free!
You also get to know if the sender has read your message. Users can also add a group to their contact list and start a conversation among this group.

So how do they make money when they’re free?
There is a small annual subscription of 99 pence on Android and other OS. As for iPhone users, they have to pay a onetime download fee of 60 pence. This is miniscule compared to the money spent on conventional messaging systems. Another reason why they can afford is because the system is technology intensive and hardly employs more than 10-50 employees. Just as it does not entertain advertisements, so does it not advertise itself as well- a lot of its publicity is word of mouth.

Things that you need to know when installing WhatsApp
WhatsApp is not the right choice when you are out of town and roaming is activated. You may have to activate roaming settings for WhatsApp. You may also have to check with your service provider on a suitable data plan before choosing WhatsApp.
Despite its success, the App has also faced privacy and security issues. In fact, a report by the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada and the Dutch Data Protection Authority  revealed that   when WhatsApp copies contacts from users phones, numbers of non-users is retained rather than deleted.  There were also issues regarding a security hole that left users susceptible to hijacking. Another report claimed that information sent through WhatsApp is not encrypted, thus messages can be read if traces of these are available. You might not want to share information that is likely to be misused through WhatsApp.

The Future

WhatsApp is more than likely to stay unless a better instant messaging system comes along. In which case, the developers may have to re-invent themselves and come up with a better plan. But one thing is for sure- unlike Facebook, they are going to remain free of advertising forever!

Is Google+ Local the Way Ahead

Google+ may not be the number 1 yet, but it has been experiencing a steady fan following thanks to its ability to influence search engine rankings in Google. To push user experience even further, Google had merged Google Places with G+ and Google Maps to form a unique service called Google + Local. Thus users not only get directions of places, but also get to read/write reviews about the place they have visited. Here’s how the G+ Local page looks like:

So what is Google+ Local and why should businesses avail this feature? Read further to know more;

What is Google+ Local

Google+ Local integrates some of Google’s powerful features to form a unique platform that is designed to help local businesses succeed on the web. For several years now, Google has been trying to push local results in SERPs. And there’s a reason why they have been doing that…studies indicate that nearly 73% of online activity is now related to local searchAnd almost 88% of these consumers go to that business within 24hours of searching!

Thus, when it understands that a search may have local intent, Google Local + pages are added to the search results. These search results are either added at the top or close to the top results.  This is the way it works;

Just enter your search query on the Google+ Local page, and local listings related to your search query come up along with reviews by friends and fellow G+ users. Thinking about visiting the place? Just click on the Get Directions tab on the right side of the page! Once you have visited the place, you can also leave a review for your friends.

The reviews are based on the Zagat score card that was acquired by Google in 2011. The Zagat scorecard is based on user ratings that are graded on a scale of 0 to 3.

Why is it Important

There is common perception that Google+ is soon going to join the list of products that were introduced with fanfare but have been axed unceremoniously by Google. However, Google+ is the way forward for the company and its employees. Right now, Google’s desperately trying get people to use G+. And the only way they can do it is through reviews, pictures, etc. Small and medium businesses find it easier to push their business through the Google+ Local page than to do it through conventional SEO practices. In fact, if your Google+ rankings are in place, you do not even need a website!  But in order to do there are a few things they ought to pay attention to. Some of them include;

Maintaining consistent information about name addresses and contact number everywhere.

Completing the Google+ Local profile up to the last detail.

Refraining from activities (such as soliciting reviews) discouraged by Google

Ideally businesses would spend thousands of dollars on CPC which is time consuming and expensive as well. Besides results from CPC campaign are not very effective- stats indicate that these campaigns only have a 3% success ratio.

The only way to increase business for SME’s is to adopt Google+Local.

Looking for an App Developer? Here are a Few Things You Ought to Look for!

Thanks to smart phones, we’re slowly but surely entering into a culture where ‘there’s a solution for that’ is slowly replaced with ‘there’s an app for that’! You have an app to remind you to drink water, one to help you cheat your spouse, and even to help you plan a baby! The entire app development industry is said to be worth billions of dollars, even by not taking into account the thousands of low quality apps that hit the market every day. But with so many companies claiming to be ace app developers, how do you choose one that suits your project and is able to consistently deliver the goods? Here are a few things to look for in an app development company:

Can They Deliver Across Multiple Platforms:

It is common knowledge that apps that can reach across platforms have a higher chance to succeed. Is the app developer restricted to just the iOS or Android platform or does he have experience in working across multiple platforms? For instance, Srishti Innovative can help you develop apps for iOS, Android, and even web applications.

Enthusiasm Counts More than Experience:

I know, this one’s a little difficult to accept. But today, many recruiters are looking for developers who have the passion for mobile phones. This passion leads them to learn quickly and go beyond the usual. Does the company have enough people who seem to be passionate about mobile technology?

Don’t just Go by What’s Written on the Site:

You don’t want to find yourself banging against a wall in the middle of a project. You definitely need developers with whom communication occurs as a two way process. A successful project needs people, who can ask the right questions and sort things out when something’s not right.  The website may have the right keywords, but that is not enough to trust the company with your project.

Portfolio:

What does the company’s portfolio say about them? How many apps developed by the company are available at the app store? Did you check statistics regarding the download? These are the things that describe the success rate of the app; don’t just go by the company’s word on it. Besides, almost all apps lose relevance over time. It is important that the developers should be able to help you with upgrades. Check if the company is open to these jobs.

 Ability to Stick to Deadlines:

The time taken to develop an app speaks volumes about the strength and experience of the company. With thousands of apps being introduced every day, even a small delay can cause the project to fail. In fact, time is most often the decider when choosing an app development company.

Are they a Proper Company or Just a Bunch of Freelancers Working Together:

Everyone wants try their hand at app development today. There’s no problem per se in employing a freelancer. But they’re not often capable of handling large and crucial projects. Established companies have a structured business model that helps to execute the project in a seamless fashion.

Does the Company Sell its Own Apps?

If yes, then there could be a conflict of interest!

Location:

This may not be all that important, but at least make sure that the company displays its physical location and other contact details.

Low Cost Smartphones: Are They Here to Stay ?

If there was ever a debate about the reach of low cost smart phones, recent rumours about Apple launching a low cost version of its iPhone proved it true! There’s a lot of talk about how handsets that could be as low as $200 could be a fitting answer to the Chinese phones that seem to be selling like hot cakes everywhere. This is probably a move affected by Android that has set its eyes both on high end as well as low budget smartphones. But are cheap phones really popular and is their popularity here to stay? Read further to know more;

The Current Trend in Smartphones:

The low end smartphone segment is undoubtedly the fastest growing market with sales turnover in 2012 to be around 206 million. Around 2016, sales figures are expected to rise manifold to up to 559 million! But people are no longer satisfied with just any smartphone. There’s an increasing demand for phones that offer high performance and come with complete features. Indeed, there are some tech giants that are eyeing this segment with keep interest. Intel, for instance has launched low cost phones that offer high performance, albeit at competitive prices. The phone comes in two versions, Yolo and Xolo; while Yolo is for the Kenyan market, Xolo is for the Indian market. The phone has a screen size of 3.5”, has 1 GHz processor speed, and also comes with theXMM6265 modem that supports international roaming.  With brand name and competitive pricing to its advantage, there’s no reason why Intel should not be able to succeed.

Already, there are a few big players such as Nokia and Samsung that have understood this and have launched their version of low end phones. Nokia’s Asha 310 for instance, comes with a dual SIM facility (a necessity for most users), a 3 inch touch sensitive display, 2G enabled, and operates on Symbian OS. At a price of just Rs. 3350, this is indeed a steal. Meanwhile, Karbonn has introduced the A2 smartphone range with features including dual SIM, Micro SD and Micro USB port, Android Gingerbread OS, RAM of 256, Camera of 3 MP at back and VGA at front, 1 Ghz single core processor, etc. At just 5000, this is indeed worth buying.

Samsung has always focused on both levels of users-high end as well as low end. Staying true to its focus, the company has launched two entry level phones in its Galaxy line; the Galaxy Young and Galaxy Flame. The phones run on Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean), with 1 GHz processors, 3.27 inch touch screen, have 4GB of internal storage, Wi-Fi connectivity, etc. But there’s not much information on the pricing- so you’ll have to watch this space for information once this is released.

The Market for Low Cost Smartphones:

Countries like India and China are targeted by Mobile manufacturers as their primary markets. Unlike the western countries people do not have to remain tied up to their phones until the expiry of the contract period. Here, people buy a phone for their birthday, one for their anniversary, and yet another for Valentine’s Day. Manufacturers who can provide even 70% of the iPhone user experience can be sure of success. In fact, small manufacturers who started out as suppliers to big companies are now launching on their own. For instance, Zoom Technologies, the Chinese company that supplied phones to Motorola is now planning to launch a brand of its own. It is companies like these that are expected to raise sales figures by offering phones that cost less than $50. And for this, they have help from microchip design companies in Taiwan and China like MediaTek and QCOMM. In fact, Media Tek has recently announced the launch of its quad core chip that could bring down the cost of smartphones even more.

In Conclusion:

As earlier said, the trend among youngsters is to opt for low cost-high performance phones that can be easily discarded. And as long as this trend continues, low cost phones are here to stay!

Does Penguin & Panda Updates signal the end of SEO?

Life in the SEO world was pretty much uncomplicated earlier. Just work on getting  some backlinks and also gain some reciprocal links! That was enough…  I remember how simple & easy SEO was in the early 2000’s. However, today everyone seems to have their own ideas about the future of SEO after the emergence of the Panda Update first & then Penguin Update to Google’s algorithm.  And a majority of the opinion point out towards the demise of SEO. So, is it RIP for SEO?  However, if you still claim nothing has changed you would be living in a fool’s paradise. The truth is, SEO has changed drastically in the aftermath of the Panda and Penguin updates

Google decided to wish everyone a happy new year with its 24th Panda update on 22 January 2013. This update affected 1.2% of all English queries. It was just a small update compared to earlier Panda Updates.If you remember, the Panda Update  made its debut in February 2011.

User experience matters now more than ever! Quality of the site is more important now. I have myself been exasperated by the quality of websites that were thrown in the Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs). They were stuffed with keywords, making the content meaningless. And what’s more, none of them gave what I wanted. But the Panda update changed all that.

For the record, Panda update is named after Navneet Panda, a Google employee. What Navneet Panda did was to scale machine learning to a much higher level Y than its previous scale of X. Metrics, numbers and signals that come from user and usage data metrics which were previously ignored were paid attention to now.

After the first Panda Update, Google had a major battle with Content Farms & degraded them in SERPs.   It was said that Content farms may have content that is relevant for a search query, but it may not provide the best user experience. In fact, this was one of the main reasons why a lot of sites slipped down the popularity charts as an after effect of Panda Update.

The Penguin update  happened in April 2012 and intended to hit those indulging in keyword stuffing, suspicious link schemes, and Over-SEO. Basically, everything that Google had warned people against in its Webmaster guidelines.

But what about those websites that paid attention to content, backlinks, and user experience? Some of these sites have still been hurt by the Google Updates! This is reason why some people think that the Panda & Penguin Updates is the beginning of the end of SEO.

Frankly, I do not agree with the statement that the Panda & Penguin Updates signal the end of SEO. I agree today, SEO is a lot more dynamic. It is no longer simple and straightforward as it was prior to the Google updates.  You need to build credibility around your site.  Make sure that it is read worthy, images are appropriate and with proper tags. Social networks have now become more popular than ever- not as a primary metric, but strong enough to influence user experience.
