Embracing Enterprise Mobility Management

Today’s enterprise comprises of broader, more diverse employee base that is utilizing mobile devices, applications and content in myriad ways.  Managing this diverse landscape can be challenging, increasingly so with the introduction of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) programs. Mobility initiatives of the key businesses today are reactionary efforts to the emergence of the bring-your-own-device (BYOD) trends in the workplace making it the key driver behind most enterprise mobility investment decisions.

Sensitive data that traditionally stayed within the corporate walls now travels home with the employees. In fact, Forrester reports that 53 percent of employees are using personally owned technology for work purposes. With the ubiquity of today’s mobile technology and this new level of complexity and risk, IT departments are looking for a more holistic approach to manage all things mobile.

What is Enterprise Mobility Management?

Enterprise Mobility Management

As per Wikipedia, Enterprise Mobility Management is the set of people, processes and technology focused on managing the increasing array of mobile devices, wireless networks, and related services to enable broad use of mobile computing in a business context.

“Gartner has overhauled its annual mobility management Magic Quadrant report to focus on what’s known as enterprise mobility management.” As reported by Ellen Messmer from Network World.

The Evolution of Enterprise Mobility Management

As mobility continues to evolve and mature, technologies such as Mobile Device Management (MDM), Mobile Application Management (MAM) and Mobile Content Management (MCM), concurrent but unconnected, have begun to overlap which together is Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM). EMM is a mobility management approach that accounts for the entire mobile ecosystem.  Enterprise Mobility has become one of the top five strategic initiatives in most business around the world.

Enterprise Mobility Management

There are three areas that present challenges to Enterprise:

Securing Mobility:  Mobile security is, perhaps, the most important aspect of mobile management. Enterprise need to shift from a mobile centric focus to a more holistic approach to security with solutions that address device, location, service, network, infrastructure and user security.

Enterprise Mobility Ecosystem: The enterprise mobility ecosystem is a complex environment where multiple applications and services reside involving integration of multiple products from multiple vendors into a  single solution.

Mobility Maturity: As mobility is becoming an integral part of the IT and business strategy, it is important to know which stage of the mobile evolution one’s organization is currently in.

 Enterprise Mobility Management Framework

It’s important that a holistic approach to developing and implementing a enterprise mobility management must consider the following framework:

 Enterprise Mobility Management

Mobile Device Management (MDM) –  is the delivery capability of managing a mobile fleet.

Mobile Application Management (MAM)  – If your mobility strategy requires use of corporate applications such as CRM, or a custom build application you will need to define the processes and technology to deploy, update, secure, and remove these applications from Mobile devices. The Application department as well as the security and IT departments should be involved here.

Mobile Content Management (MCM) – Defining what company information will be transmitted to mobile devices and how the company controls access and removal.

Mobile Email Management (MEM) – offers comprehensive email security for your on-the-go mobile users in a BYOD environment. It combines policy enforcement and classification to deliver end-to-end, data-centric security while maintaining a native email user experience.

Telecoms Expense Management  – a  key concern of any CIO in the development of a Mobile Strategy is cost control and management. Telecom Expense management involves everything from managing the Mobile Provider billing, user roaming cost, and transparency in all aspects of cost.

Some other aspects to be considered are -

Mobile Risk Management - Evaluating the risk to the company of corporate information being compromised and implementation of auditing procedures to alert the company of those compromises.

Mobile Security Management – Technology to enforce security standards and auditing.
