The year 2015 is going to see big changes coming our way in the manner that we consume IT. The lists from leading industry analysts at Gartner, IDC and Forrester are out. Here is our compilation of what to look out for in the coming year and beyond for App Developers.
New Paradigm for Product Development
A significant digital disruption is already underway with many of the upcoming startups looking at achieving a fine synergy between the physical and digital worlds. This meshing up of the physical and digital is redefining the way we looking at product development (the word product used to encompass services as well). According to Gartner – “By 2015, more than half of traditional consumer products will have native digital extensions and by 2017, 50% of consumer product investments will be redirected to customer experience innovations.”
Expanded Computing Environment and Internet of Things
The growth of mobile devices and their importance in the present and future has been touted enough in 2014. 2015 will see a shift from device focused approach to firms aiming to manage the mobile ecosystems and customer mobile moments as a whole. As per the Forrester report, for us developers, this would mean a shift from mobile app development to accessories such as wearable devices, smart cars, TVs and even homes. Gartner predicts that “Internet of Things will only continue to grow”. While call of the hour is to devise a strategy to deliver consistent customer experiences seamlessly across all devices, this would continue to pose challenges for some years to come. There is tremendous scope for developers to focus on the performance and UX of application products within an ecosystem so that they meet the user’s expectations.
Managing Customer’s Micro Moments on Mobile
According to Jeffrey Hammond, Analyst with Forrester, mobile user engagement techniques are shifting towards management of micro moments which will continue in 2015. Micro Moments are brief instances where user interacts with the application. The developer would need to look at increasing the duration and frequency of such engagements for the mutual benefit of the company and the customer.
With huge amounts of data coming in from IoT, social media and wearable devices, Cearley from Gartner says “all apps will have to be analytics apps.”Analytics will be an integral part of any digital product in 2015 so that the relevant data from the various touch points can be processed to make more impactful decisions.”
Better Security for Apps
Workforce mobility and BYOD have increased the vulnerability of enterprise apps and through them that of sensitive data to security breaches requiring higher standard of security, robust testing and more sophisticated tools for risk mitigation.
